"Igbos can never survive biafra" - There is no unity in igboland says Mbaka

Fiery Enugu-based Catholic priest gave his views today on the current agitation for the secession of southeast Nigeria from the rest of the country as the Republic of Biafra.

Addressing a gathering of Igbos in East London, the controversial cleric said that Igbos should be the last people seeking to leave Nigeria. He said:

“No Hausa person owns property in Igboland. No Yoruba person owns property in Igboland. But 60% of businesses in northern Nigeria are owned by Igbos. 40% of businesses in western Nigeria are owned by Igbos.”

Mbaka implied that Igbos had the most to lose by the breakup of the country. He claimed to know about how much Igbos owned across Nigeria because he was regularly being invited to to say blessings at the opening of new businesses by Igbos, especially in northern Nigeria. He said:

“Go to Sabon Gari in Kano and see what Igbos own there”. He added that Igbos could complain that they were not enough of them in government, but under former president Goodluck Jonathan, an Igbo was finance minister, Central Bank governor, and so on.

He went on to suggest that those Igbos that have been seduced into agitating for Biafra by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of separatist group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are “the children of the poor”, who in his view, are not thinking properly about the implications of secession. Mbaka said those people were being deceived by Kanu.

Mbaka then moved on to what could happen in an independent Biafra if it ever came to fruition. He said: “If you think we have trouble in Nigeria now, we will see trouble in Nigeria. No Anambra man would let an Enugu man be president, no Imo man would let an Abakaliki man be president”.

He was very convinced that fault lines between different Igbo communities would come to the fore if Biafra ever became reality. When challenged on talking about politics, Mbaka responded that “politics is part of life” and “I read political science and political philosophy”. He added that decisions made by politics affect everyone.

Nigeria survived Cameroon revenge to draw 1-1 in Yaounde

Nigeria survived a late Cameroon onslaught to draw 1-1 in Yaounde Monday and move closer to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Moses Simon put Nigeria ahead on 30 minutes and substitute Vincent Aboubakar equalised from a 75th-minute penalty at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo to spark a rally by the hosts.

Unbeaten leaders Nigeria moved to 10 points from four matches in Group B and a home win over Zambia on October 7 will clinch a sixth World Cup appearance.

Dropping two points in Yaounde eliminated seven-time World Cup qualifiers Cameroon as only group winners go to Russia and they trail Nigeria by seven points with two matches to play.

The draw came three days after Nigeria thrashed African champions Cameroon 4-0 in Uyo -- a result that prompted losing coach Hugo Broos to make four changes.

Among those dropped were striker Aboubakar and winger Christian Bassogog, whose second-half introductions lifted the "Indomitable Lions" and put pressure on the "Super Eagles".

Simon scored with a close-range shot past goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa after a low cross eluded several defenders.

A collision between Arnaud Djoum and Nigeria goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa led to the spot-kick, and Aboubakar scored with a shot into the middle of the net.

Cameroon had another penalty appeal rejected by the impressive Gambian referee as they pushed for a first win in the "group of death" that includes Algeria and Zambia, who meet Tuesday.

Ezenwa came to the rescue six minutes from time with a double save, the second particularly being brave as he dived at the feet of Djoum and was injured.

But for much of the match it looked like the central Africans were going to suffer a first World Cup qualifying defeat at home since losing to Congo Brazzaville in October 1976.

The "Super Eagles" Nigeria were more threatening going forward, thanks to crisp passing, good off-the-ball movement and dazzling individual skills.

Nigeria have dedicated the qualifying campaign to goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who is battling leukaemia in England.

The disease was discovered when he went for a routine pre-season medical at second-tier club Wolverhampton Wanderers three months ago.

"Carl is constantly in my thoughts, those of the other coaches, the players and the officials," said Germany-born Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.

Guinea are away to Libya later Monday needing maximum points to have any chance of catching Group A leaders Tunisia.

Nigeria can’t afford to take any risk against cameroon says Gernot Rohr

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has said he will not risk playing Odion Ighalo against Cameroon unless he is fully fit.

The Changchun Yatai star was on target as the Super Eagles walloped the Indomitable Lions 4-0 in the first leg but was replaced in the second half by Kelechi Iheanacho.

And the coach insisted he will wait until the very last minute before deciding on whether his talisman should play in Monday’s encounter.

“If Ighalo cannot play, we will decide at the last moment,” Rohr told media.

“We have two possibilities; we have Kelechi [Iheanacho] and we have Anthony [Nwakaeme]. So we two centre forwards who are ready to play for him.

“I will like to use the same but there is a little question about Ighalo and his leg, so we can’t afford to take any risk.

“The possibility is to bring players but that will be decided [on Tuesday morning].”

The German tactician also disclosed that his men are prepared to withstand whatever the Indomitable Lions throw at them.

“We expect a big beginning of the game against Cameroon who will try a lot of aggressiveness to play,” he continued.

“This is a physical team but we are ready physically also to have a big fight with them.”

A win for the Super Eagles at Stade Ahmadou-Ahidjo, Yaounde will hand a ticket to 2018 Fifa World Cup Russia with two games to spare.

The Super Eagles boss says he will wait until the last minute before deciding if his side's talisman has recovered from injury to face Cameroon

I am sorry If fans think I'm the problem - Arsenal boss

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has called on supporters to stick by his team after describing the 4-0 loss to Liverpool as "absolutely disastrous".

The Gunners failed to register a shot on target in a lacklustre display that drew criticism from fans and pundits.

"If some people feel as if I am the problem, then I am sorry that I am the problem," Wenger told Sky Sports.

"But we want our fans to be with us even in a losing performance like that."

He added: "The only thing we can do is come back and give them a better performance."

Wenger signed a new two-year deal at the end of last season, despite calls from some supporters for him to be replaced.

The club finished fifth in the league, meaning they missed out on Champions League football for the first time in Wenger's 21-year tenure, but won the FA Cup.

Wenger left club record signing Alexandre Lacazette on the bench at Anfield, but was able to give forward Alexis Sanchez a first start of the season.

However, the Gunners were overrun by goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge and when asked what was wrong with the performance, Wenger said "everything".

"We were not at the right level from the first minute - physically, technically and mentally - and we were punished," said the Frenchman.

"Today our performance was not acceptable. It is true today we were an easy opponent for Liverpool.

"Our performance was absolutely disastrous. Not to become too emotional, we have to take some distance, and there are some reasons behind it, and the players now go on their international break, but we do have to take the consequences of our performance today,"

Serving senator Declared Wanted by Police

The Nigeria Police has asked a serving Senator to return to service on the grounds that he did not legitimately resign from the Force.

Senator Isa Hamman Misau is being wanted by the police for alleged forgery and desertion from the Police.

The Police in Nigeria is insisting that Misau is still a Policeman and should not be a Senator.

Misau is currently representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

On Friday, Sen Misau, who is Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy and member of the Committees on Police Affairs and Intelligence, condemned what he described as “series of fraudulent practices in the running of the Nigerian Police”.

Addressing National Assembly Correspondents on Friday, Senator Misau, who is a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said that a high level of corruption had been noticed in the handling of monies allegedly being collected by the police as payment for special security services rendered by the Police to corporate bodies, oil firms and highly placed citizens in the country.

The lawmaker also accused the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, of extorting money from Commissioners of Police, State Mobile Commanders and SPU Commanders.

But the Police spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood has asked the general public and indeed the Senate to dismiss statements credited to Senator Misau, saying everything he said about the IGP and the Police are false.

According to Moshood, Senator Misau is “a habitual and unrepentant liar.”

“His real name in the Police is DSP Mohammed Isa Hamman, with Police number AP No. 57300. He is still a Police Officer and not a Senator because his name is still in the Police Service.

“Senate will do the nation good by asking him to return to the Nigeria Police Force to face disciplinary committee and answer all the charges bordering on serious misconduct, unprofessional wrong doings as earlier contained in our press statement released today.

“We want the public to know that he is not fit and proper to be a Senator of the federal republic of Nigeria; because that purported retirement letter he displayed today was forged.

“All DSP Hamman was saying were cheap blackmail, distraction and deliberate acts to derail investigation.

“So the force will want the Senate Ethics and Privileges committee which we have confidence and trust into see reason to ask him to dress up in his police uniform to come and appear before police disciplinary committee to answer charges against him.

“The IGP has no use to distractions DSP Hamman is instituting before the public, and no matter the position any person is, once he or she runs afoul of the law, he will be made to answer the charges,’’ Moshood stated.

Punch News are false - Garba Shehu

Punch had reported, “The Buhari presidency has been dogged by persistent rumors and speculation that a group comprising some members of the President’s extended family and friends are the powers behind the throne. This group is said to have the ear of the President, influence policy-making and determine those who get major appointments.

“Among those identified as being members of the cabal were: the President’s nephew, Mamman Daura; the father to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (Muhammed Bello) Musa Bello; the President’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari; Samaila Isa Funtua and a few others.

The leading newspaper had also reported that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was being tele-guided by the cabal and was being made to purposely look incompetent by the Presidents aides.

Reacting to that report, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said it was blackmail.

His statement to the press reads, “As Acting President, Vice President Osinbajo enjoyed the support of the Villa Staff and the entire cabinet. Otherwise he would not have succeeded and earn the praises of the President. `These are just a few among the false and illogical accusations making the CoS larger than life, with the aim of pulling him down. No Chief of Staff including this one can create hurdles for a president and survive the next day. “The roles and duties don’t warrant the kind of falsehood being spread.’’

“Publishing poorly-researched allegations and trying to pass them off as investigative journalism or as news may lead to more newspaper sales or to more clicks on a website; but they will also, in the long run, slow down the growth and development of our country, which right now requires the absolute focus of President Buhari and his carefully-selected team to build the Nigeria of our dreams.

“Unfortunately, this is the path The Punch has chosen and there’s no one to help them but themselves.’’

“It is difficult to understand what anyone wants to achieve peddling such falsehood that the President, himself a former military general and Head of State and Commander-In-Chief is subject to undue influence and manipulation. “It is both ridiculous and inconceivable.

“As someone who works very closely with President Buhari, I can testify to how my years of experience as a newspaper editor are often put to the test by the sheer thoroughness with which the President edits every single document brought to his desk.

“Every memo, statement, speech, is subject to his intense scrutiny, right down to the placement of commas and full stops. “Therefore, alleging that President Buhari signs memos brought to him by government officials or a so-called cabal without reading them, immediately casts doubts on the credibility of the ubiquitous unnamed sources that the reporters of these articles quote.

“But, of course, the President cannot do everything. He cannot micromanage every task. “That is why he needs close officials, whom he trusts, who will be willing to offend others in the process of ensuring his own safety and well being, and the advancement of his vision for Nigeria.

Shehu advised Journalists with questions to ask concerning the President and the Villa administration to always contact the Special Adviser, Femi Adesina, SSA to the President (Office of the Vice-President) Laolu Akande or himself. “Where we don’t have your answers, we are ready to obtain as much as we can, the correct responses to your enquiry,’’ he added.

Breaking News: Gunmen attacked EFCC headquarters, ‘threaten to kill top investigator’

Some gunmen attacked the head office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja today few hours ago.

Wilson Uwajaren, spokesman of the commission, who disclosed this in a statement hours after the incident, said the gunmen left a death note for one of the anti-graft agency’s detectives.

He disclosed that the intruders could not make their way into the complex because security guards on duty repelled them.

“A major security breach was recorded at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the early hours of Wednesday, August 16, 2017, as unknown gunmen attacked the office located at Wuse Zone 7, Abuja,” he said.

“The group of heavily armed bandits invaded the office at about 05.00 hours and began shooting into the premises, damaging vehicles parked in the premises in the process. However, the attack was repelled by guards on duty.

“The hoodlums escaped in a getaway vehicle but not without leaving a message; a white envelope dropped by the fleeing attackers was found to contain a death threat addressed to Ishaku Sharu, a senior investigator with the commission. Ishaku who heads the foreign exchange malpractices fraud section is in charge of corruption investigation involving several politically exposed persons and retired military brass hats.

“The attack on the zone 7 office which houses the commission’s AMCON desk, procurement fraud and foreign exchange malpractices sections, is coming few weeks after another investigator, Austin Okwor was shot and wounded by unknown assailants in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.”

Uwujaren added that the incident had already been reported to the police for investigation.

Time For Propaganda are Over, It's Time For Proper Agenda - Jonathan

The Presidency's statement issued by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on media to President Muhammad Buhari, has only exposed why Nigeria is in an economic recession and is floundering in all spheres.

It is quite sad that Malam Garba Shehu does not know that oil constitutes only 15% of Nigeria's GDP and thus a fall in the price of oil should not lead to a collapse of the Nigerian economy as has been experienced under President Buhari.

If Garba and his boss are willing to learn, the Jonathan Foundation and the Peoples Democratic Party can arrange a course for them to be tutored on the subject-how to grow your economy to be the largest in Africa. We make bold that we are experienced in that area.

When Mr. Shehu says "There is nothing to show for the revenues earned, no major capital project was completed, neither power generation, road development, rail or agriculture benefitted from the windfall earnings" he only further exposes his intellectual laziness and failing memory.

Obviously Garba Shehu has forgotten that when his boss was commissioning the Abuja-Kaduna 187KM fast railway that enables Nigerians work in Abuja and live in Kaduna, he was forced to admit that the project was conceived, built and completed by the Jonathan administration.

At that event, President Muhammadu Buhari said about the $1.5 billion project and I quote "This project was conceived by a previous administration, started by the last government".

My question to Mr. Shehu is this-who is a liar between him and his boss?

I also urge Garba Shehu to take note of the fact that the only Federal University in his boss's home state of Katsina was built by the Jonathan administration in addition to 13 other universities and 165 Almajiri schools built all over Nigeria. For people who don't value education, I am not surprised that they see this as "nothing to show"!

It may also interest Garba Shehu to note that the Jonathan administration revived the moribund Nigerian Railways Corporation to the extent that the loquacious Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi was forced to confess on December 15, 2015 and I quote "In fact, I think we have a problem; most people don’t believe that the railway transport is functioning in Nigeria.

I didn’t even know, until I started this tour, I never knew that the railway was functioning, it was even from his (MD’s) speech that I learnt that there are some coaches or services that go to Kano or Port Harcourt or elsewhere."

These are just a few of the infrastructural legacies of the Jonathan era.

It is quite surprising that Garba Shehu now praises the former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, His Royal Majesty, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Nigerians have not forgotten that it is the same Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, now Muhammadu Sanusi II who carpeted the economic policies of the Buhari administration, saying that under the Buhari administration, and again I quote, “There is one rate for petroleum marketers, there is interbank rate, there is another for money market operators such as western union, money gram, there is bureau de change rate and there is a special rate you get when you call the CBN for a transaction."

My other question to Garba Shehu is this, how will an economy not collapse when you have multiple exchange rates?

Malam Garba and his boss continues to show that they are in over their necks by their statements. For instance, Garba says "At the inception of the current administration, 21 States were unable to meet their salary bills and the spectre of workers arrears had commenced. The PDP solution was the raid the Ecological Fund and selectively grant N2Bn each to the PDP States."

Is it that Garba Shehu and his boss do not know that Nigeria is a federation and that the Federal Government cannot control the states? No wonder they are against restructuring and want to throw the report of the 2014 National Conference into the dustbin.

We have already proved that the accusation re the Ecological Fund is a lie and it shows desperation on the side of the Presidency to rehash it.

When that notorious liar, Nasir El-Rufai first made the accusation, we showed, with documentary evidence, that core PDP states like Akwa-Ibom, where the then chairman of the PDP Governors Forum comes from and Ekiti state which was the only PDP state in the Southwest, did not benefit from the Ecological Fund. Meanwhile, 10 states which were of the then opposition All Progressive Congress did.

Apparently, when Garba Shehu and Lai Mohammed speak, they speak their native language, lies!

Mr. Garba Shehu would do well to remember that his boss promised Nigerians 3 million jobs every year. Rather, according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, 4.58 million jobs, created by the Jonathan led PDP administration, were lost in his boss's first year.

Laughably, Garba Shehu cites the fight against corruption and the terror war as major achievements of the Buhari administration.

How can Garba Shehu reconcile his so called anti corruption war with the fact that Nigeria has made NO PROGRESS in Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index under Buhari and in the latest CPI Transparency International said and I quote "Some other large African countries have failed to improve their scores on the index. These include South Africa, Nigeria, Tanzania and Kenya."

On the alleged terror war, Nigerians will recall that President Muhammadu Buhari said that Boko Haram has been technically defeated.

My question is how can a defeated Boko Haram now have the ability to kidnap policewomen and oil explorers? How can a defeated Boko Haram attack military formations? How can a defeated Boko Haram carry out more suicide bombing a in the last eight months than at any other time in Nigeria's history.

Has Garba Shehu forgotten that on July 6, 2017, the World Economic Forum named Nigeria as the fifth most dangerous country in the world? Or that on the 4th of February 2017, the United States Congress cited Nigeria as "the most dangerous place for Christians in the world"?

Garba Shehu can continue living in his fool's paradise but he should give Nigerians more credit than to issue the pathetic tissue of lies that he called a response to former President Jonathan's comments at this past weekend's non elective Congress of the PDP.

Dr. Jonathan spoke generally about the positive impact of the PDP administrations on the lives of Nigerians and specifically on some of his exemplary achievements that made life better for the citizenry. He spoke about his reforms in the electoral process, transport, rail services, industrial and automotive policy, as well as the transformational impact of many other policies like YouWin, Youth Enterprises with Innovation (YouWin), bank verification number (BVN), the treasury single account (TSA) and the e-wallet system which were all measures designed to fight corruption.

The time for propaganda is long gone. Any body who wants to differ should speak to those issues raised, and not boasts about accomplishments that are not visible. The succeeding administration has been on the saddle for more than half of its four-year tenure.

This is the time for it to display its scorecard, especially since the blame game no longer connects with Nigerians. At some point under the PDP oil price fell to as low as $30 dollars and the party never cited that as a reason for non-performance.

It is up to Nigerians to determine if they are better or worse off today than they were in 2015, when former President Goodluck Jonthan left office.

Finally, I urge Garba Shehu to go back and read Malam El-Rufai's memo to President Muhammadu Buhari where El-Rufai said, and I quote, "In very blunt terms, Mr. President, our APC administration has not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight ‘change’ but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance outside of our successes in fighting BH insurgency and corruption."

Ronaldo face five matches banned

Cristiano Ronaldo face five-match ban by the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Monday for pushing the referee after being sent off in Real Madrid's 3-1 Spanish Super Cup, first leg win over Barcelona.

The World Player of the Year received an automatic one-match ban for his dismissal on Sunday and an extra four games for his reaction towards referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea.

Ronaldo was also fined 3,805 euros ($4,500) and has 10 days to appeal the ban.

Should any appeal fail, Ronaldo will miss Wednesday's Super Cup, second leg and Madrid's first four La Liga games of the season against Deportivo la Coruna, Valencia, Levante and Real Sociedad.

However, Ronaldo will be free to feature when Madrid start their defence of the Champions League on September 12 or 13.

Madrid had already signalled their intent to appeal Ronaldo's second yellow card shown for diving eight minutes from time when he went down inside the area under pressure from Samuel Umtiti.

"Ronaldo's sending-off annoys me because even if it is not a penalty, the card is harsh," said Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane after the game.

"We will see if we can do something so that he is available on Wednesday."

Ronaldo was only on the field for 24 minutes after he was introduced as a second-half substitute and fired into the top corner 10 minutes from time to give Madrid a 2-1 lead.

He received his first yellow card for removing his shirt in celebration before being shown the 10th red card of his career two minutes later.

"Once shown the red card, said player (Ronaldo) pushed me lightly as a sign of his disapproval," De Burgos Bengoetxea wrote in his referee's report.

According to the RFEF's rules, such offences are met with a suspension of anything between four and 12 games, but previous cases also resulted in four-game bans.

Despite Madrid's claims Ronaldo had reacted in the heat of the moment, the RFEF judged the push was an "unjustified and disproportionate reaction".

Senator Kwankwaso, it was gathered, defected with 10 Kano State lawmakers.

His defection may not be unconnected with his ordeals in the APC.

Kwankwaso has been at loggerheads with his successor, Umar Ganduje.

In March last year, the leadership of the APC in Kano chapter had initiated moves to suspend him over what it termed anti-party activities.

IPOB Deceiving Igbo in the name of Biafra - Okorocha

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state, Monday, said that the Pro Biafra agitators, led by Nnamdi Kanu, Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, was deceiving the Igbo using the name of Biafra.

According to the release issued to newsmen in Owerri, by Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemedo, the governor stated this while handing over Staff of Office and certificates of recognition to sixteen traditional rulers in the state. The release further captured that IPOB activities would only result to loss of trillions of properties and assets owned by the Igbo in the country. The governor added that no sane person would talk of division in Nigeria.

As captured by the release, “On IPOB, the cloud is gathering storm, nobody is talking even our traditional rulers, Pastors and leaders, this is bad for our people. “If you will remember vividly that few years ago, during the Civil War, it was a similar story. That was how it all started. At that time, we believed that the Ohafia warriors will be able to fight and disseminate the North. “Now we are been deceived that IPOB will drive away Nigeria and give us Biafra. Even our Pastors, men of God and some leaders in the rural areas, nobody is speaking out against this action and the song of war is coming gradually like a desert encroachment.

“We fought the war and it was believed that the Igbos will learn from it but they still went ahead and developing the resources of other regions. “There are 5 million Igbo living outside the shores of Igbo region. Any form of war will cause the Igbo over 3 trillion naira loss in properties and assets.

“No sane person will spread the message of division and war because it does not benefit the Igbo in any way. I urge you traditional rulers to speak against it and educate your people on the true state of things. Igbo need to build bridge of unity across the nation.”

On the issue of pension in the state, Okorocha said: ” Go home and tell the pensioners that you met the governor and he will address there matter and ensure that they get 100% of their pension arrears. “If in any way we are not able to continue paying in future we shall come back to them and also tell them that we cannot afford to pay, we are using the whole Paris Club to pay 100% pension to our dear pensioners.”
