Police killed Militant & Rescued Abducted four British in Delta State

Three suspected members of the Karowei militant gang that reportedly abducted four British missionaries and killed one of the foreign volunteers, Dr. Ian Squire, in the creeks of Delta State, have met their waterloo.

Dr. Ian Squire, 57-year-old British optician was on his fourth visit to Burutu, Delta State on health charity work, when he was kidnapped on October 13.

The British Foreign Office announced his death on Monday, saying that the kidnappers captured him and three other Britons from their lodge demanding ransom.

The abductors had released three of their victims, but killed Squire, a man who had left his thriving practice in Shepperton Surrey, to offer succor and sight to poor Nigerians.

Squire, David Donovan, his wife Shirley and Alanna Carson captured with him were in Nigeria to offer cataract operations and eye check-ups to Delta State people.

Dr. Squire, according to british media reports, ran a private optical service in Shepperton, Surrey and had been founder and chairman of Christian Charity Mission for Vision since 2003

According to police reports, one of his abductors was shot dead during a crossfire with operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), while two others were arrested.

Two of the gang members were said to have been arrested earlier by the IRT operatives, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, in Warri, Delta State.

Police source said the arrested suspects led the police to Sapele, Delta State, where other members of the gang were arrested.

“In Sapele, one of the kidnappers was sighted by the gang members already arrested. As IRT Operatives advanced to arrest him, he suddenly brought out a Barrette Pistol and shot Sergeant Sanusi Lanre in the stomach and Sergeant Agunbiade Adebayo on his two hands. The remaining members of the IRT replied, killing him in the process”, the police report stated..

Meanwhile, the corpse of the suspected militant has been deposited at the mortuary of the Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara.

Police source further disclosed that police Sergeants Lanre and Adebayo, were injured during the operation and were being treated in the same hospital.
